Chapter 21

January 1st

I travelled through the island, and I found more goats in the centre of the island. The animals were very shy, which made it difficult to get close to them. Still, I wanted to try to domesticate a few. I only needed an opportunity to do so. I returned with my dog the next day, but all the goats attacked it. I was not successful.

I was working on my fence from January to April. It took me a long time because I wanted to make it very thick and strong. Meanwhile, I found pigeons on the island. Their homes weren’t in the trees – they lived in holes which were in the rocks. This made them easy to catch and their meat was good. This is what I was surviving on while I was working on my fence.

I soon realised that I needed more things. Candles, for example. Without them, I had to stop working at 7 which was the time when it was getting dark on the island. I tried using goat fat instead of wax, but this didn’t work out well.

While I was working on my fences, I found a small bag. It was used for corn, but now there were only some leaves and dust in it. I took the bag outside my camp and I emptied it, as I needed another bag for gunpowder. This happened just before the rains. A month later, I found a few green leaves growing there. It was barley.

There was another familiar plant next to it – rice. I remembered emptying another bag at that place. Words can’t express how happy I was. These plants were growing just outside my door!

It was mid-April when I finally finished building my fences. There was no door – I used a ladder to climb over the wall. This way, nobody could know that I lived there.
