Chapter 28

I still needed many tools. For example, I needed an instrument to make flour from seeds. I chose a big block of hard wood for that. I also needed a sieve. I used seamen’s clothes for that. It was not perfect, but I managed to make three small sieves which served me for a couple of years. I then made bread from the flour.

I found a way to make something like an oven for baking bread. I made big plates and I put the bread between them. Then I covered everything with hot coals. This is how I made my first bread on the island. It was during my third year on the island.

I still thought of running to the beach and waiting for a ship from time to time. However, I wasn’t sure if that was a good idea. What if I was captured by cannibals?

I remembered one day that the boat from our big ship was still at the beach where the storm left it. I found it and I tried to turn it the right way, but it was covered with sand. I tried turning it for a month, but it was useless. I couldn’t even move it a little. I left the boat, but I wanted to go sailing as much as I did before.

I thought about making a canoe out of some great tree. I found a big one. I cut it and carved it. Then I burnt parts of it until I had what I wanted. While I was doing this, I realised that I didn’t know how to move it from the forest to the beach. I was really sad that I had to leave the canoe in the forest. I was a fool. Making it took me nearly half a year.

I tried everything to move the canoe. I even thought about digging a canal, but it was all useless. There was a hill between the forest and the beach. It would take many years to dig the canal through the hill and push the canoe in it. I stopped trying in the end. I left the canoe as a reminder to myself.
